Where do you place your smoke detector?
Read more here about the legal requirements in your country. In addition to complying with legal requirements, we recommend that you optimize fire safety in your home by installing smoke detectors in strategic locations:
- Escape Routes: Install smoke detectors in hallways and near staircases, especially if they lead to bedrooms. This ensures that smoke is detected quickly, allowing you to respond in time.
- Bedrooms: Install smoke detectors in or near bedrooms so that the alarm can alert occupants even at night.
- Living Rooms: It’s important to have a smoke detector in the living room, especially if there is a fireplace or other heat sources.
- Near the kitchen: Do not install a smoke detector directly in the kitchen because of the risk of false alarms caused by cooking fumes. Install it near the kitchen, or choose the Aroha Heat Detector for use inside the kitchen itself.
- Avoid: Bathrooms , garages, and other damp areas increase the risk of false alarms.
Please note: Aroha Home smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are compatible with your smart home via Matter over Thread (Home Assistant, Apple, Google, Alexa, etc.). They cannot be connected to any detectors other than Aroha Home detectors. Alternatives include:

- Aroha Link Smoke detectors, heat detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and combination detectors are interconnected, without an app.
- Aroha Smart Connect smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and combination detectors offer app notifications and control via Tuya Smart or SmartLife, without needing to be linked to each other.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Which app is compatible with the Aroha Home smoke detector? With any Matter-supported app, such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, Home Assistant, Ikea Home Smart, Samsung SmartThings, and many more. Not compatible with Tuya Smart or SmartLife.
- What settings can I adjust in the app? Receive alarm notifications, check the status, and set up automations such as: triggering other detectors (via Home Assistant only), turning on smart lights, turning off ventilation, unlocking doors, or playing a voice message. Features may vary depending on the Matter app.
- How does Matter over Thread work? Matter is the universal smart home standard: it ensures that devices from different brands work together seamlessly, regardless of which platform you use (such as Home Assistant, Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, etc.). Thread is the wireless network over which Matter messages are transmitted. Thread uses what’s known as a mesh network: devices amplify each other’s signals, making the connection more reliable and stable than with regular Wi-Fi. In addition, Thread consumes much less power, making it ideal for a battery-powered smoke detector.
- What is a Thread Border Router? To connect the Aroha Home smoke detector, you’ll need a Thread Border Router. This is a device that connects the Thread network to your home network. Many people already have one without even realizing it. It’s built into devices such as the Apple HomePod, Apple TV 4K, Google Nest Hub, or Amazon Echo (4th generation).
